Q:
How to perform a steering, CV Boot and suspension check? Posted by Customer
A:
With the wheels on the ground, you can perform a steering and suspension check. Start by gently rocking the steering wheel back and forth while the vehicle is stopped and the front wheels are pointed straight ahead. If there is any movement or play, it could indicate worn or broken components such as front wheel bearings, main shaft yokes, intermediate shaft yokes, lower arm ball joints, or steering gear. Other signs of faulty steering and suspension include excessive body movement over rough roads, swaying or leaning around corners, and binding when turning the steering wheel. To check the shock absorbers, push down and release the vehicle several times at each corner. If the vehicle does not return to a level position within one or two bounces, the shocks/struts are worn and need to be replaced. Listen for any squeaks or noises from the suspension components while bouncing the vehicle. Under the vehicle, raise it with a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands. Check the tires for irregular wear patterns and proper inflation. Inspect the universal joint between the steering shaft and the steering gear housing, as well as the steering gear housing for grease leakage. Ensure that the dust seals and boots are undamaged and that the boot clamps are secure. Look for any looseness, damage, loose bolts, broken or disconnected parts, or deteriorated rubber bushings on all suspension and steering components. While an assistant turns the steering wheel from side to side, check for free movement, chafing, and binding in the steering components. Move each control arm up and down with a pry bar to check for play in the ball joints. If any ball joint has play, it should be replaced. Inspect the ball joint boots for damage and leaking grease, replacing them if necessary. The CV boots are important for protecting the constant velocity (CV) joints from dirt, water, and foreign material. Wash the boots with soap and water to prevent premature deterioration caused by oil and grease. Pay extra attention to the outer CV boot, as it wears out sooner due to constant pivoting with the front hub. Finally, inspect all boots for tears, cracks, and loose clamps, replacing them if there is any evidence of damage or leaking lubricant.
