If a rack and pinion boot is torn, dirt and moisture can damage the steering gear, so it should be replaced. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and securely placing it on jackstands before removing the front wheels. Next, remove the tie-rod end and locknut. Then, take off the boot clamps; the outer clamp can be removed with pliers, while the inner clamp can be cut off or removed by squeezing the two tabs with slip-joint pliers and releasing the locking tab with a screwdriver for reuse. Slide the boot off the tie-rod. Installation is the reverse of removal, taking care not to damage the boot while sliding it into place. Ensure the tie-rod end balljoint nut is tightened to the specified torque and use a new cotter pin, followed by securely tightening the locknut and lug nuts to the appropriate torque.
