This timing system is intricate, and one has to be very careful; any small mistake leads to the serious engine damage; thus this job should be carried out only by the experts and even the expert should consult any time he or she feels unsure. Start with the removal of the negative battery terminal, siphoning of the engine oil and coolant, removal of the battery, engine under-cover, the air cleaner housing, the radiator, the cooling fan, and the serpentine drive belt, removal of the upper intake manifold, ignition coils, the top of the engine block cover, miscellaneous, Variable Valve Timing sensor, dipstick and tube, power steering pump pulley without having to release the hoses Have the crankshaft pulley loosened but mind the symmetry before it is entirely removed. The next areas to be unbolted are the upper oil pan bolts, oil cooler hoses, radiator, water bypass hoses, Water inlet, and Timing chain cover being cautious not to harm the sealing plane. Get the No. 1 cylinder TDC of the compression stroke, fasten the tensioner to remain in the retracted state, and unlock the idler assembly, slipper component, amplitude dampers, and No. 1 cylinder timing chain without turning the crankshaft. Record all the wear and damage on various part of the car, measure the timing chain stretch on sprockets and the idler sprocket oil clearance, check the timing chain tensioners for wear and correct functioning. In installation, you need to position the crankshaft to some degree, lock the tensioners, properly align the timing chains with the sprockets by aligning their marks, and tighten all parts to the right measure of torque. To perform these operations, position the crankshaft as such to align all the timing marks, turn the crankshaft using your hands to assess resistance; shear off the old RTV sealant; lubricant, insert a new crankshaft oil seal and O-ring; spread the gray RTV sealant on the timing chain cover; and install the timing chain cover as soon as possible. Last, put the timing chain Cover bolts, oil pan bolts and end the procedure in a reverse manner, adding the oil and coolant, connecting the battery and cranking the engine to look for any leakage.

Some of the steps involved in the removal procedure include disconnecting the negative battery terminal, removing the drivebelt and alternator, taking off the valve cover and ABS actuator (if applicable), and more.

The initial steps include removing the engine/transaxle assembly, the drivebelt, including the drive-belt tensioner and idler pulleys, and setting the engine to TDC (Top Dead Center).

Inspect all components for wear and damage, including the timing chain, sprockets, and chain guides. Replace any components that fail inspection. Ensure the chain guides are within specified wear limits.

Refill the engine with oil and coolant, reconnect the battery cable, and start the engine to check for leaks.

Align the timing sprocket keyway with the keys on the crankshaft.
