    How do you check the timing chain tensioner behind the Timing Cover for the 1999 Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Irvin K.

    a) Check that the plunger moves smoothly when the ratchet pawl is raised with your finger. The tensioner plunger must move freely in the bore of the housing. b) Release the ratchet pawl and make sure the plunger is locked in place by the ratchet pawl and does not move when pushed with your finger.
