At the specified intervals, the air filter should be replaced with a new one. A thorough preventive maintenance schedule would also require the filter to be inspected between filter changes. For V8 models, the air filter housing is mounted in the right front corner of the engine compartment. To replace the air filter, unlatch the cover retaining clips and detach any hoses that would interfere with the removal of the air filter cover from the housing. Lift the air filter element out of the housing and wipe out the inside of the housing with a clean rag. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element and replace it if it is dirty. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean from the back to the front surface with compressed air. However, if it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily with compressed air, discard and replace it. Caution should be taken to never drive the vehicle with the air filter removed as excessive engine wear could result and backfiring could even cause a fire under the hood. Place the new filter in the air filter housing, making sure it seats properly. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. For V6 models, the air filter housing is located on the right side of the intake manifold plenum. To replace the air filter, open the two retaining clips and swing open the air filter housing. Remove the air filter element from the housing and wipe out the inside of the housing with a clean rag. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element and replace it if it's dirty. If it's only moderately dusty, blow it out from the back to the front surface with low-pressure compressed air. However, if you can't clean the filter element satisfactorily with compressed air, replace it. Caution should be taken to never operate the engine with the air filter removed as excessive engine wear could result and backfiring could even cause a fire under the hood. The installation is the reverse of removal.
