Q:
How to dismantle a cylinder head? Posted by Customer
A:
New and reconditioned cylinder heads can be obtained from manufacturers or engine overhaul specialists. For home mechanics, it may be more practical and cost-effective to purchase a reconditioned head rather than dismantling and reconditioning the original head, especially since specialized tools may be required and new components may not be readily available. The following steps outline the process of removing the cylinder head:Remove the cylinder head.Remove all external brackets if not already done.Remove the tappets, ensuring proper storage of the components.Use a valve spring compressor to compress each valve spring and remove the split collets. If the spring upper seat does not free, tap the top of the tool with a light hammer.Withdraw the valve through the combustion chamber, deburring if necessary.Remove the valve stem seals using pliers, noting any color differences for inlet and exhaust valves.Remove the valve spring lower seats and store them with their respective springs.Keep the valves together with their collets, spring seats, and springs in their correct sequence, unless they are to be renewed. Place them in labeled containers. Note that the No 1 valve is closest to the timing chain end of the engine.

Q:
How to remove the cylinder head? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the cylinder head, start by draining the cooling system. On later models, remove the plenum to gain better access. Remove the camshafts, exhaust manifold heat shield, and manifold. Disconnect the coolant hoses and various wiring plugs, earth leads, and brackets. Loosen the cylinder head bolts and remove them along with the washers. Carefully lift off the head, being mindful not to damage the lower face. Remove the old head gasket and tappets if necessary. To prepare for refitting, clean the mating faces of the cylinder head and block, remove any nicks or scratches, and check for warpage. Check the condition of the old head bolts and clean the bolt threads in the block. Refit the cylinder head by aligning the dowels and placing the new gasket correctly. Lower the head onto the block and tighten the bolts to the specified torque in stages. Finally, follow the reverse steps of removal, ensuring all fasteners are tightened and allowing time for sealant to cure before starting the engine. Check for any leaks after restarting the engine.
