To remove the rocker arms and pushrods, start by taking off the intake and exhaust manifolds, followed by the drivebelt(s). Unbolt the power steering pump if equipped and set it aside without disconnecting the hoses. Next, remove the air pump and bracket assembly from the engine, along with the air injection manifold from the cylinder head. Drain the engine coolant, label, and then remove the coolant temperature sending unit on the cylinder head if equipped. For air-conditioned models, remove the air conditioner compressor without disconnecting the hoses and set it off to the side. Loosen and remove the cylinder head bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence, then carefully lift the cylinder head off the engine, using a soft-face hammer and wood block if necessary to break the gasket seal if it is stuck. For installation, stuff clean shop towels into the cylinders and thoroughly clean the gasket surfaces, ensuring all traces of gasket material are removed. Run an appropriately sized tap into the bolt holes in the engine block and use a die over the bolt threads to remove sealant and corrosion. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks and check for warpage, and if in doubt about the integrity of the cylinder head bolts, replace them with new ones. Use a composition gasket installed dry, ensuring the word TOP faces up on the cylinder head side before placing the cylinder head on the engine. Install the cylinder head bolts and tighten them in several steps according to the recommended torque specifications. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse order of removal, change the oil and filter, refill the cooling system, and run the engine while checking for leaks and proper operation.
