For 1979 through 1982 models, check the power source line voltage by ensuring the igniter, mounted on top of the ignition coil, shows about 12 volts when the ignition switch is turned to On and a voltmeter is used on the ignition coil positive terminal and body ground. To check the power transistor in the igniter, touch the voltmeter probes to the ignition coil negative terminal and body ground, which should also indicate about 12 volts. Unplug the electrical connector from the distributor and use a 1.5-volt battery to test the pink and white wire terminals, ensuring the voltmeter reads about 7 volts. With the ignition switch still On, connect the battery to the pink wire terminal for no longer than five seconds, and the voltmeter should indicate five volts less than battery voltage. For 1983 through 1985 models, the igniter is located below the coil; check the power source line voltage by unplugging the brown and yellow wire connector and ensuring the voltmeter reads about 12 volts. Reattach the brown connector, disconnect the coil wire, and use a 1.5-volt battery to test the pink wire terminal, ensuring a spark is emitted. For 1986 and later non-turbo models, if other malfunctions are ruled out, replace the igniter. For turbo models, the igniter is behind the fuse panel; check the power source line voltage by unplugging connector 6-P and ensuring the voltmeter reads about 12 volts. To test the power transistor, unplug connector 4-P and each ignition coil, then use a 3-volt battery to verify momentary continuity at various terminals. If the igniter fails any tests, replace it by labeling and disconnecting all wiring, unbolting it from the mounting bracket, and reinstalling in reverse order.
