To remove the rack and pinion, it is most effective to take out the subframe, although access to the rack and pinion nuts from underneath the vehicle may allow for sliding the rack out to the side. If opting for this method, disconnect the steering column, tie-rod ends, fluid pipes, and other components. Next, remove the four mounting bolts and recover the nuts located beneath the subframe. Lift off the mounting clamp and take out the rubber bush located below, as one end of the rack is secured to the subframe with a clamp. If installing a new rack and pinion, the lower intermediate shaft will likely need to be removed and transferred to the new unit; mark the shaft in relation to the rack body for easy alignment on the new unit, then remove the pinch-bolt and lift out the shaft. For refitting, follow the reverse order of removal while ensuring all fixings are tightened to the specified torque, reattach the subframe, and for models equipped with hydraulic power steering, fill and bleed the power steering system.
