Inspect the fuel pump and lines for damage or leakage. Pay special attention to hoses connecting the tank to the pump, as cracks can hinder fuel supply. If there's high fuel consumption or a fuel smell without visible leaks, check the engine oil for fuel contamination, indicating a possible fuel pump diaphragm rupture. To measure fuel pressure, disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and attach a T-fitting and pressure gauge. Start the engine, the pressure should be 2-1/2 to 8 psi and steady. Upon shutdown, pressure should drop slowly. A sudden drop suggests a bad outlet valve, warranting pump replacement. High pressure may mean a plugged air vent, while low pressure might require pump replacement after confirming unobstructed and good condition hoses and lines.
