A number of electrical equipments in the vehicle like the fuel injections, horns, starters and the fog lamps through relay which transmits the signal electrically through a low current control circuit which in turns opens as well as closes a high current power circuit. A defective relay will not allow the associated component to work correctly and most of the relays are placed in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. If a relay is thought to be an issue the vehicle can be without it and tested either through a certain process or by a mechanic. Relays are mounted in groups screwed to a common base, so that defective relays have to be replaced as a unit A diagram of the circuit is usually marked on the top of the relay and further reference identification is embodied on the cover of the relay box. There are some relays that are incorporated into the interior fuse box some of them are the starter relay together with other relays. There are four kinds of relays in general use, primarily consist of normally closed types; in which present current passes one circuit until the relay is energized, which opens the first circuit and closes the second. Typically there are control circuit terminals which connect to the relay coil and are typically double; there is also other power circuit terminals that connect internally when energized with the control circuit terminals. So low current relays may be marked on the control and power circuit terminals to aid identification. The ohmmeter should be connected across the power circuit terminals while, testing a relay expecting a break. For a normal four-terminal normally open relay, continuity should appear when the relay is activated and absent if it is not. To join these control circuit terminals, the jumper wires can be used to link the relay and the battery as well as the ground while operation of the relay should be lively accompanied by a clicking sound and continuity check on the meter. In case the relay does not click, then probably the jumper wires may require exchanging. If the relay did not pass the test, then one has to replace it.

A faulty relay can be removed and tested using a specific procedure or by a dealer service department or a repair shop.
