Q:
What Is the Role of Oxygen Sensors and Air/Fuel Sensors in OBD-II Engine Management Systems and How Do They Function in Toyota Solara and Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
All vehicles are equipped with On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) engine management systems, which include the ability to verify the accuracy of the feedback loop between the oxygen sensor and the PCM. This is accomplished through the use of an oxygen sensor or air/fuel sensor located before and after the catalytic converter. By sampling the exhaust gas, the PCM can determine the efficiency of the converter and predict potential failures. Camry models with four-cylinder engines have one oxygen sensor and one air/fuel sensor, while V6 engines have three sensors. The primary sensors are located in the exhaust manifolds, and the secondary sensor is positioned after the catalytic converter. Oxygen sensors operate based on the oxygen content in the exhaust stream, producing a voltage output that the PCM monitors to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. Oxygen sensors require proper operating temperature, electrical connections, outside air supply, and the use of unleaded fuel. A diagnostic trouble code is set if the oxygen sensor produces a steady voltage below the specified threshold. Air/fuel sensors, on the other hand, provide feedback to the PCM about the alterations it makes to injector pulse width. Their voltage output is proportional to the air/fuel mixture ratio in the exhaust stream, but they do not switch back and forth like oxygen sensors. Special precautions must be taken when servicing sensors to avoid damage and ensure proper operation. Cleaning solvents should not be used, and the silicone boot must be installed correctly.

Q:
How do you check the oxygen sensor on a 2001 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
A:
Locate the electrical connector and insert pins into the signal and ground terminals, then use a voltmeter to monitor the voltage signal as the engine warms up. The sensor should fluctuate between 0.1 to 0.9 volts in closed loop mode. Inspect the heater resistance and verify it is receiving battery voltage. If the sensor fails any tests, replace it.
