The brake line and bearing retainer nuts should be disconnected, allowing the axle shaft to be pulled out. If necessary, a slide hammer can be used.

After raising the vehicle, alignment marks should be placed on the drive axle-to-differential and the drive axle-to-stub shaft flanges.

To remove the rear axle assembly, start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle. Support it securely on jack stands placed underneath the frame and remove the wheels. Then, support the rear axle assembly with a floor jack placed underneath the differential. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting nuts and compress the shocks to get them out of the way. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential companion flange and hang it with a piece of wire from the underbody. Unbolt the stabilizer bar from the stabilizer bar link, if equipped. Disconnect the parking brake cables and the flexible brake hose from the junction block on the rear axle housing. Plug the end of the hose or wrap a plastic bag tightly around it to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Disconnect the lateral control rod and the upper and lower suspension arms. Slowly lower the axle to the floor with the jack while an assistant steadies it, and then remove the axle from under the vehicle. To install, follow the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring that all suspension bolts and nuts are tightened, as well as the driveshaft companion flange bolts.
