Even though you might be an expert or race-car driver and feel you can fix just about anything, the strut/coil spring assembly is not serviceable and if the struts or coil springs are leaking, have lost their damping ability or are physically damaged, getting all the options before commencing work is advisable. The strut assemblies with the springs may be also bought with exchange, so it would be easier in terms of time and effort. Before proceeding with the disassembly of a vehicle, always ensure the cost and availability of each part because disassembling a strut is quite risky. It is advised that a good spring compressor be used and instructions given by the manufacturer of the compressor should be strictly followed. Once the coil spring has been extracted from the strut assembly, set the coil spring aside in an appropriate location. To disassemble, remove the strut assembly and mount it to a rip noticing that the vice should not be over tightened while holding the strut assembly. Place the spring compressor as stated by the manufacturer then compress the spring to ensure that pressure is off from the up-per spring seat through jiggling the spring. Locate the position of the upper and lower spring seats and suspension support, now loosen the damper shaft nut and secure it if required. Take off the nut and suspension support, and observe if the bearing runs smoothly with needle, observing also the condition of rubber part. Pull out the spring seat and upper insulator to the damper shaft, sample the rubber spring seat for further damage. Carefully get rid of the pressure from the compressed spring while the ends are pointed away from you and shift the rubber bumper from the damper shaft. Ensure that the lower insulator is worn; if found to be worn, replace it. During reassembly, if changing the lower insulator, then it should be placed in the right position and to assemble the rubber bumper, the damper rod should be extended. First, position the coil spring in its place, on the lower insulator with the end inserted correctly. Fix the next part which is the upper insulator and spring seat, ensure you properly align the flats of the damper shaft and the spring seat. Fix the dust seal and suspension support in the position where management-marked positions match, then install a new nut and fasten it to the referenced torque to re-insert the strut assembly.
