Q:
How to check Fuel Pump for insufficient fuel delivery? Posted by Customer
A:
For general checks on insufficient fuel delivery, start by ensuring that the battery is fully charged and inspect all fuel lines for leaks. Verify if the fuel pump is running by having someone turn the ignition switch to ON while listening for the sound of the fuel pump operating. If there is no sound, check the fuel pump electrical circuit, ensuring the connector is firmly connected and inspecting the wiring harness. To access the fuel pump connector, remove the pump access plate. If the fuel pump runs but a fuel system problem persists, proceed with a fuel pump pressure check. For V6 models, relieve the fuel system pressure, locate the fuel supply hose quick-connect fitting in the left side of the engine compartment, disconnect it, and connect the fuel pressure gauge between the two sides of the quick-connect fitting using a special fitting. For V8 models, relieve the fuel system pressure, remove the banjo bolt connecting the front fuel crossover pipe to the left fuel rail, and install a special banjo bolt Schrader valve. Connect the fuel pressure gauge hose to the adapter. In both cases, with all accessories turned off and the ignition key set to ON, the fuel pump should run for about two seconds. Note the reading on the gauge and ensure the pressure holds steady after the pump stops running. Start the engine, let it idle at normal operating temperature, and compare the fuel pressure with the specified value. If the pressure is higher than specified, depressurize the fuel system, detach the fuel return line from the fuel pressure regulator, and check for obstructions. If no obstruction is found, replace the fuel pressure regulator. If the pressure is lower than specified, pinch the fuel return line and observe the gauge. If the pressure increases, replace the fuel pressure regulator. If it does not increase, replace the fuel filter and check the pressure again. If it remains low, the fuel pump is likely faulty. After completing the fuel pump pressure check, relieve the system fuel pressure, remove the adapter and fuel pressure gauge, reconnect the fuel line to the fuel rail, reconnect the battery, and check the fitting for leaks. For the fuel pump electrical circuit check, if the pump does not turn on with the ignition switch in the ON position, check the IGN fuse, EFI fuse, circuit opening relay, EFI relay, and fuel pump relay. If the relays are functional but the fuel pump does not operate, inspect the fuel pump circuit connectors and wiring. The fuel pump can be accessed through a small access plate on the floor.
