1987 Toyota Supra Turbocharger Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps should be followed to replace a defective turbocharger for the 1987 Toyota Supra?
A: If you have to substitute a damaged turbocharger then you need to first identify the cause of a turbo failure, which can be found out partly by checking out the level of oil in the engine and the quality of the oil further, or the oil lines extending to the turbocharger. First, unscrew the cable from the negative terminal and while doing so, look for any anti-theft system in the stereo. Remove the engine coolant and, depending on the model, the air cleaner ducts and hoses if any. Remove the three air hoses and the PCV hose, and loom the airflow meter connector, and the power steering idle-up air hose. Slightly unscrew and free the bolt and remove the no. 7 air cleaner hose, airflow meter and the air cleaner housing cap jointly. Unplug the oxygen sensor electrical connector and then loosen three nuts and washers so that you can pull off the turbo heat insulator, and then removes oil dipstick with its guide and O-ring. Slightly open hose clamps to disconnect the air cleaner pipe and hose from the bottom of the turbo; now undo the mounting bolt. Three nuts shall be unscrewed, the clamp bolt turned counter clockwise and the exhaust pipe disconnected from the exhaust manifold together with the old gasket being disposed of. DISCONNECT F: take out the turbo oil pipe mounting nuts and bolt; also, take out the turbocharger stay as well as the upper turbocharger stay. The hone clamps need to be unscrewed to remove the turbo coolant hose connected to the coolant outlet housing and to remove the water connection separated from the union pipe through a banjo bolt along with the sealing washers that should be discarded. Lose the four turbocharger mounting nuts to pull out the turbocharger and gasket, being gentle not to harm either of them. Loosen the two bolts to withdraw the coolant pipe and gasket together with the pipe nut and train pipe nut for the turbo oil pipe and gasket and then the four nuts to withdrawal the turbine outlet elbow gasket. All intake and exhaust ports and the oil inlet should be plugged while the turbocharger is off to avoid the entry of dirt and with oil lines should be checked for sludge and replaced when necessary. Clean all old gasket material from the lubrication oil pipe flange, turbocharger oil flange and from the outlet elbow sealing surfaces. For installation, reverse the removal steps; and use new gaskets and sealing washers; and replace any required bolts or nuts with the new ones as stated in the specifications. Pour 1/2-to-3/4 oz. of oil into the turbocharger oil inlet and rotate the impeller wheel to spread oil to the bearing and / or tighten all critical fasteners to the specified torque.
