1987 Toyota Supra Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the fuel pump for the 1987 Toyota Supra?
A: Relieve the fuel pressure and detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, ensuring to check for any anti-theft system in the stereo before doing so. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. For models from 1979 to 1983, the fuel pump is located just above the right inner CV joint, above the differential at the rear of the vehicle. Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector before proceeding with removal, then use vise grips or clamps to pinch the fuel line shut. Remove the fuel line outlet banjo fitting bolt, slide back the clamp, and detach the hose from the inlet fitting. Loosen the pump clamp bolt and nut, then slide the pump from the bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to use new washers on the fuel line banjo bolts, and check for leaks after starting the engine. For models from 1984 and later, the fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank, then take out the fuel pump bracket bolts on top of the tank and withdraw the pump unit. Disconnect the electrical wires from the fuel pump terminals, swing the pump unit out from the bracket, loosen the upper hose clamp, and pull the pump and short section of hose off the metal pump outlet line, replacing the short section of hose with a new approved fuel hose during installation. To remove the fuel pump filter, detach the rubber cushion, remove the clip, and withdraw the filter. Installation is the reverse of removal, replacing the fuel filter, outlet hose, and retaining clips as necessary, using a new gasket when installing the pump in the fuel tank and ensuring clean mating surfaces. Start the engine and check for leaks at the hose and pipe connections.
