1991 Toyota Supra Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disassemble and service the cylinder head and valves for the 1991 Toyota Supra?
A: Take off the cylinder head as it will be observed that for 1979 through 1981 models, certain procedures are somewhat different from those for 1982 and later models. On vehicles produced from 1982 through 1986, remove the camshaft housings, rocker arms, and lash adjusters; while on vehicles produced from 1987 and later remove the camshafts, the valve lifters, and the shims. Ensure you label and store the removed valves and their related parts in such a way that they will be placed in the same valve guides as before. Just to be a bit more organized, utilize a small plastic bag and put a proper label on it. To remove the keepers of the first valve's springs, use needle nose pliers, or tweezers, or a magnet; compress the springs with the help of a spring compressor. Slowly let go of the compressor and for models with the retainer, spring, and spring seat, remove them properly. Remove the spout and, with the help of a screwdriver, take out the valve; now take off the oil seal from the guide. If it binds, drive it back into the head and pare up the vicinity of the keeper groove with a fine file or a whetstone. Proceed to the other valves in the same manner and retain all components of each value set aside for reassembly. Once all valves and such have been removed as needed, and set neatly aside, clean the head with particular attention, and finish any stripping of the engine ahead of this procedure.
