1992 Toyota Supra Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should you properly reassemble a cylinder head after valve servicing for the 1992 Toyota Supra?
A: Regardless of whether the head was sent to an automotive repair shop for valve servicing, ensure it is clean before beginning reassembly. If the head was sent out for valve servicing, the valves and related components will already be in place, so start the reassembly procedure accordingly. Starting at one end of the head, apply moly-base grease or clean engine oil to each valve stem and install the valve. Lubricate the lip of each valve guide seal, carefully slide it over the tip of the valve, and then slide it all the way down the stem to the guide. Using a hammer and a deep socket or seal installation tool, gently tap the seal into place until it is completely seated on the guide, ensuring not to twist or cock the seal during installation to maintain proper sealing against the valve stem. The seals for intake and exhaust valves are different, so avoid mixing them up. Drop the spring seat or shim(s) over the valve guide and set the valve spring and retainer in place. Compress the spring with a valve spring compressor and carefully install the keepers in the upper groove, then slowly release the compressor, ensuring the keepers seat properly. A small dab of grease can be applied to each keeper to hold it in place if necessary. Repeat the installation process for each of the valves, ensuring to return the components to their original locations. Check the installed valve spring height with a ruler graduated in 1/32 inch increments or a dial caliper, taking the measurement from the top of each spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of the retainer. For 1979 through 1981 models, the remainder of cylinder head assembly is detailed in one section, while for 1982 and later models, it is covered in another.
