2004 Toyota Sienna Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install the oil pump in 3.5L V6 engine for the 2004 Toyota Sienna?
A: To remove the timing chain cover the first thing is to take off the oil pump is installed internally on the cover. There is a 27mm socket that is used to take off the reliefs valve plug followed by the removal of the spring and the relief valve. Then, the bolts of the oil pump cover and this cover, the oil pump drive rotor and the driven rotor are removed. Wipe all components with solvent and check parts for sign of wear and damage, make sure the oiled relief valve is free to move in its bore. Check the oil pressure relief valve sliding surface and its valve spring also, if they are bad, have to replace both together. Assess the amounts of the clearance of the driven rotor-to-body, rotor side, and rotor tip by applying a feeler gauge and do comparisons with the templates. Any worn out parts should be changed or the whole assembly of the oil pump in case it is damaged. To install pry out the old crankshaft seal from the timing chain cover and then lubricate the outer edge of the new crank seal with multi-purpose grease or engine oil and then slide in the seal. Using a grinder apply oil to the seal lip and for the pump, apply petroleum jelly to the pump drive and the driven rotors before aligning them in the timing chain cover with the pump marks facing outwards. Lubricate the pump cavity with petroleum jelly to ease the process of priming; put the cover and fasten the bolts. Coat the oil pressure relief valve with fresh engine oil, put the valve and its spring back to the top of the pump housing and the plug as well. Lastly, replace the timing chain cover; to put back all what you removed you do it in the sequence of the removal; add oil and put a new filter before starting the engine to check if there is any leakage.
