Toyota Echo Flywheel

The Toyota Echo Flywheel smooths engine pulses by storing engine rotational energy to provide power and an effortless ride during gear shifts. This heavy Flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft. It continues to spin whenever the engine operates. Its inertia smooths out the bursts of combustion in the cylinders. The ring gear on the rim allows the starter to crank the motor at ignition. The Flywheel aids in securing the clutch pressure plate through a friction face. Therefore, every clutch engagement relies on a healthy Flywheel surface. Two styles appeared over the years, the traditional solid Flywheel and the dual mass Flywheel version, each applied on particular Echo models. The solid style is one rigid piece that can sometimes be machined to remove heat spots or minor warpage. It can only be machined within narrow material limits set by Toyota. Pack between primary and secondary masses is a spring-filled damping section that absorbs vibration and enhances shift feel but cannot be resurfaced, and its internal springs may fail, frequently necessitating complete replacement. Excess ring gear wear on older Echo cars, deep scoring, or cracked faces require a new Toyota part.

Toyota Echo Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Refit the Transmission and Flywheel/Driveplate in a Manual Transmission on Toyota Echo?
    A:
To remove the transmission, start by removing the clutch on manual transmission models. Before removal, paint an alignment mark between the engine and flywheel/driveplate to make it easier to line up during refitting. Jam a suitable tool into the ring gear to prevent the crankshaft from rotating as the bolts are removed. Unscrew the six retaining bolts and carefully remove the flywheel/driveplate from the rear flange of the crankshaft. Recover the adapter plate from the end face of the engine if necessary. When inspecting, renew the flywheel/driveplate bolts if they are in poor condition. Check the starter ring gear for any broken or excessively-worn teeth and renew if necessary. Inspect the clutch friction surface for grooving or hairline cracks and have it surface-ground if possible, otherwise renew the flywheel. When refitting, ensure the mating faces of the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft are clean. Apply thread-locking fluid to the bolt threads before screwing them into position. Align the flywheel with the previously-made mark and hand-tighten the bolts initially. Prevent the crankshaft from turning and tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence to the specified torque. Refit the clutch if applicable, and then refit the transmission.
