The Exhaust Manifold channels exhaust gas from the engine's cylinder head into a single outlet that feeds the rest of the exhaust system. The hot gases from each cylinder tube have to be prevented from flowing backward into the cylinders, so hot gases are collected by the Exhaust Manifold. Thus, this is bolted to the head and sealed by gaskets. After that, the hot gases are directed toward the catalytic converter, muffler, and tailpipe. In many applications applied on the Toyota Land Cruiser, durable cast iron is applied, but for some Toyota applications, welded steel or stainless steel tubing is joined to an Exhaust Manifold flange. The Land Cruiser has certain installations that carry protective heat shields to insulate nearby parts as well as the cabin floor. - Q: How to remove and install the exhaust manifold in DOHC engine on Toyota Land Cruiser?A:Before removing the exhaust manifold, you have to first undo the negative terminal of your car battery along with the activation code of any car stereo system immobilizer. If this is provided, then the pipes and the valve assembly that is installed around the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold should be detached. Next, remove the upper heat insulator that is fastened to the exhaust manifold by bolts, The bolts are located at the upper heat insulator that is fastened to the exhaust manifold. After that, apply penetrating oil on the exhaust manifold mounting nuts and the nuts connecting the exhaust pipe to the manifold and having soaked, one would then remove them. To do this disconnect the manifold and gasket by unscrewing some nuts. To install remove all the old gasket material and carbon deposits using a scraper from the face of the manifold and cylinder head. In case there was a gasket leak, then it is advisable that the manifold is examined for warpage and if found, it should be resurfaced. Place a new gasket over the cylinder head studs so as the mark are on the outside, put the manifold and screw the mounting nuts on. Gradually, and with equal increments, turn the nuts from the center out to the recommended torque. Last, replace the rest of the parts in reverse manner than they were removed and start the engine in order to examine exhaust bov leaks.
