Toyota Prius Wheel Stud

The Toyota Prius Wheel Stud is the part of the wheel that screws into the hub in order to attach it to the hub. Each Wheel Stud is mounted semi-permanently to the brake disc so that the lug nut can clamp the rim tight. This way, whenever the wheels come off for a rotation job, the Wheel Stud remains fixed. Thus, the driver won't have to juggle loose bolts. Over the years and through modern Prius models and Toyota hybrid generations, the simple Wheel Stud has stayed consistent in objective. Though it is available in two material styles, a standard steel design for everyday strength and a carbon steel variant for added resistance to heat, oxidation, and friction that can build up during extended Prius commutes. The stud retains the rim seated with equal reliability, whether it is a sealed unit, requires knuckle removal in the case of a press fit, or whether it is a non-driven axle with tapered roller bearings. The Wheel Stud can become brittle due to rust, aging, or contamination. Once a stud cracks, the rest have to take on extra load, which causes wobble or wheel separation. So, the cost to replace a single stud is reasonable for the part. Hence, it is often better to replace a stud rather than risk damage to other components. This stud design continues to anchor every Toyota wheel with confidence.

Toyota Prius Wheel Stud Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace wheel studs on Toyota Prius?
    A:
The above stated procedure is followed for the front and rear wheel studs. Start by removing the wheel lug nuts before lifting the car and placing it on sturdy jack stands, then remove the wheel. Next, take off either the brake disc or the brake drum. Thread one of the lug nuts part way onto the stud that is to be removed, then use a hydraulic press to push the stud out of the hub flange. Thread the new stud through the hub flange from the rear, put a few flat washers and a nut on it. Turn the lug nut another half turn to push the stud completely into the flange following a proper fitment. Last but not the least, fit the brake drum or disc, fit the wheel and the bolts, drop the vehicle and finally tighten the bolts.
