Q:
How to remove the camshaft on V4 engine for 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara and 2002 through 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the camshaft, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the valve cover and visually confirm that the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke. Apply a dab of paint to the timing chain links where they meet the upper timing marks on the camshaft sprockets. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts and remove the timing chain tensioner and camshaft position sensor. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and disengage the timing chain from the sprockets. Hang the timing chain up with a piece of wire and place a rag in the timing chain cover opening to prevent foreign objects from falling into the engine. Verify the markings on the camshaft bearing caps and loosen the caps in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Detach the bearing caps and remove the camshaft(s) from the cylinder head. Remove the lifters from the cylinder head, keeping them in order with their respective valve and cylinder. Inspect the camshafts, camshaft bearings, and lifters for wear or damage. Before removing the camshafts from the engine, check the camshaft endplay and inspect the camshaft bearing surfaces in the cylinder head for damage. Measure the outside diameter of each camshaft bearing journal and record your measurements. Measure the height of each camshaft lobe and check the camshaft runout. Inspect each lifter for wear and measure the outside diameter of each lifter and the corresponding lifter bore inside diameter. If necessary, install new No.1 journal bearings for the intake camshaft. Apply engine assembly lubricant to the camshaft lobes and journals and install the camshaft into the cylinder head. Install the bearing caps and bolts and tighten them in the proper sequence. Engage the camshaft sprocket teeth with the timing chain links and position the sprockets over the dowels on the camshaft hubs. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts and tighten them. Install the timing chain tensioner and complete the installation in reverse order.
