The fuel pressure regulator is positioned between the fuel rail and the head on 1979 through 1981 models, below the rear end of the rail on 1982 through 1986 models, and on top of the front end of the rail on 1987 and later models. If a malfunction is suspected, check the system fuel pressure. If the test indicates a faulty regulator, begin by relieving the system fuel pressure. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, taking care if the vehicle's stereo has an anti-theft system. For 1979 through 1981 models, remove the intake tube from the throttle body, then detach the PCV hose and the vacuum sensing hose from the fuel pressure regulator. Place a shop rag or container under the regulator to catch spilled fuel, then detach the fuel return hose, which is clamped on 1979 through 1986 models and connected with a banjo bolt on 1987 and later models. For 1982 through 1986 models, disconnect the fuel delivery line from the regulator, ensuring to discard old sealing washers and use new ones upon reattachment. On 1979 through 1986 models, unscrew the locknut and detach the regulator from its mounting bracket, while on 1987 and later models, unscrew the locknut and remove the regulator from the fuel rail. Installation follows the reverse of removal, ensuring that hose and vacuum connections are clean, and tighten the regulator locknut and banjo bolt to the specified torque, using new sealing washers when reconnecting the fuel return hose.
