To remove the crankshaft pulley, start by applying the handbrake and jacking up the front of the car. Support the car on axle stands and remove the plastic cover panel below the engine on the driver's side. If not already done, remove the auxiliary drivebelt. Undo the pulley centre retaining bolt using a socket and bar, making sure the car is securely supported and using good-quality, close-fitting tools. The crankshaft pulley must be held stationary while its retaining bolt is slackened. One method is to have an assistant sit in the car and engage a gear, then let the clutch pedal up and apply the footbrake hard. Another method is to remove the starter motor and jam the flywheel ring gear to prevent the engine from turning. Loosen and remove the pulley bolt, then take off the pulley. Clean the threads and examine the pulley bolt carefully. Toyota does not require a new one to be automatically fitted, but if there is any doubt about its condition, obtain a new one for refitting. To refit the pulley, clean the inner side of the pulley and slide it onto the crankshaft over the Woodruff key. Fit the bolt and tighten it as far as possible until the pulley starts to turn. Using the same method as for loosening, tighten the pulley bolt to the specified torque. Finally, refit the engine lower panel and lower the car to the ground.
