Disconnect the Fuel Level Sensor's electrical connector on the fuel tank, then use an ohmmeter to check resistance. With a full tank, the resistance should be around 17.0 ohms, and around 120 ohms when empty. If readings are off, replace the unit. Note: This test can be done with the unit removed, checking resistance with the arm down (empty) and up (full). If replacement is required, early models need the fuel tank removed, while later models need the middle seat removed. Be cautious while handling the float. Disconnect electrical connectors, remove the screw, and separate the Fuel Level Sensor from the assembly. Installation is in reverse order.

For 1988-1990 models, you'll need to remove the fuel tank to access the Fuel Level Sensor. For 1991-1996 models, remove the middle seat for access. Before testing, determine the tank's actual fuel level. On 1988-1990 models, test resistance via the harness connector near the tank. The full tank resistance should be around 17 ohms for 1988-1990 models and 3.0 ohms for 1991 and later models. The nearly empty tank resistance should be about 120 ohms for 1988-1990 and 110 ohms for 1991 and later. Incorrect readings require replacement. The unit's resistance can also be tested with the float arm down (empty) and up (full). To replace, remove the fuel pump assembly, extract the Fuel Level Sensor, disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove the bracket screw. Reverse steps for installation.
