Mark the position of the appropriate driveshaft flange in relation to the transfer case flange before removing the bolts, and then disconnect the driveshaft. Remove the lock nut from the transfer case companion flange, reinstall two of the driveshaft mounting bolts to prevent the flange from turning, and engage a pry bar between them. Use a puller to remove the companion flange, then carefully pry the oil seal out with a screwdriver, ensuring not to scratch or damage the seal bore in the case, using a block of wood for additional leverage if needed. Lubricate the lip of the new seal with gear oil and tap it into position with a socket or block of wood. Place the companion flange into position, install the lock nut, and tighten it to the specified torque. Reinstall the driveshaft, ensuring the flange marks made during removal are aligned, then refill the transfer case with oil. Finally, reinstall the rock guard and lower the vehicle to the ground.

A pinion shaft oil seal failure leads to the leakage of differential gear lubricant past the seal and onto the driveshaft yoke or flange, and the seal can be replaced without removing or disassembling the differential. Begin by raising the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands, then drain the differential lubricant and install the drain plug tightly after draining is complete. Use a two-jaw puller to remove the companion flange from the pinion shaft, and carefully pry the seal out of the differential, possibly using a hammer and punch while avoiding damage to the splines on the pinion shaft. Lubricate the new seal lip with multi-purpose grease or differential lubricant and install it in the differential, using a hammer and a seal driver, large socket, or a short section of pipe of the proper diameter to drive the seal into place. Clean the sealing lip contact surface of the companion flange, apply a thin coat of multi-purpose grease to the seal contact surface and the shaft splines, then slide the companion flange onto the shaft, ensuring the match marks align. Coat the threads of the pinion shaft with multi-purpose grease, install a new nut, and tighten it while holding the flange stationary. Turn the companion flange several times to seat the bearing, then measure the torque required to turn the pinion shaft within its backlash again. The desired preload is the previously recorded torque value plus five inch-pounds; if the preload is less than desired, retighten the nut in small increments until the desired preload is reached, and if the maximum torque on the pinion shaft nut is reached before achieving the desired preload, the bearing spacer must be replaced by a repair shop. After adjusting the preload, connect the driveshaft to the companion flange, fill the differential with the recommended lubricant, lower the vehicle to the ground, and test drive it, checking around the companion flange for any signs of leakage.

This procedure applies to the rear pinion seal on all vehicles and the front pinion seal on 4WD models. Begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Remove the wheels for a more accurate pinion shaft preload reading. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential and fasten it out of the way. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the torque required to rotate the pinion and record it. A special flange-holding tool is recommended to keep the companion flange from moving while loosening the pinion nut; if unavailable, immobilize the flange with a large screwdriver wedged against a bracket or reinforcement rib. Remove the pinion nut and withdraw the companion flange, using a puller if necessary, without prying or hammering on the pinion shaft. Pry out the old seal and discard it, then lubricate the lips of the new seal with high-temperature grease and tap it evenly into position, ensuring it enters squarely and to full depth. Align the mating marks made before disassembly and install the companion flange, tightening the pinion nut as needed to draw the flange into place without hammering. Apply non-hardening sealant to the ends of the splines visible in the center of the flange, then install the washer and pinion nut, tightening it carefully until the original number of threads are exposed. Measure the torque required to rotate the pinion and tighten the nut in small increments until it matches the previously recorded figure, compensating for the drag of the new oil seal by tightening slightly more, but not exceeding 5 in-lbs. Finally, connect the driveshaft, install the wheels, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts.

The companion flange can be unstaked and removed by removing the companion flange retaining nut. If the flange is difficult to remove, use a puller.
