The oxygen sensor on 1979 and 1980 models should be replaced at recommended intervals. For 1981 models, the oxygen sensor can be checked with a voltmeter using a special tool. If the sensor does not check out as specified, it must be replaced. To check the sensor on 1981 models, remove the rubber cap from the service connector and attach the special tool. Connect the voltmeter to the tool and start the engine, allowing it to reach normal operating temperature. Increase the engine speed to 2500 rpm and hold it for 90 seconds. Observe the voltmeter, which should fluctuate at least eight times in ten seconds. If it does not, the sensor is likely faulty. To remove and install the sensor, unplug the wiring connectors and remove the nuts attaching it to the exhaust manifold outlet pipe. Remove any old gasket residue from the manifold. When installing the new sensor, use a new gasket and be careful not to damage the tube. Tighten the nuts evenly and plug in the wiring connectors.
