Toyota Highlander Turn Signal Flasher

The Toyota Highlander Turn Signal Flasher ensures your SUV's blinkers and hazard lamps pulse at the right rhythm, alerting drivers to every lane change and emergency stop. This little cylinder is the relay that resides in the fuse box. When you flick the stalk, it meters current to the indicator bulbs in timed bursts, which creates the on-off pattern. The earlier versions of the Highlander utilized a thermal Turn Signal Flasher, which heated a spring steel strip. As the metal bends, it completes the circuit, causing it to cool off and repeat. This created the blink and the audible click. The Turn Signal Flasher model evolved with time as LED technology became popular. Instead of a more costly thermal flasher, Toyota adopted the electronic solid-state Turn Signal Flasher that uses a transistorized timer rather than heat, giving consistent flashes even with low current LED lamps while imitating the classic click. While both styles serve the same purpose, the way they are triggered is different. The thermal unit reacts to heat, while the solid-state unit relies on integrated circuitry. In the event that they stop functioning or flash erratically, a worn Turn Signal Flasher is usually the prime suspect whenever a Toyota Highlander experiences a lighting issue, and a properly compatible solid-state Turn Signal Flasher replacement will restore the right cadence.

Toyota Highlander Turn Signal Flasher Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What should you check if the Turn Signal Flasher is not functioning properly on a Toyota Highlander?
    A:
When the turn signal and hazard flasher relay is operating, one can hear a clicking sound from the part. If the turn signals work on one side and the flasher unit is making its characteristic clicking sound, but the flasher rate is much faster on one side than the other on the instrument cluster, or if a bulb in a turn signal does not come on and all the lights on the other side flash rapidly, a turn signal bulb is dead. If both left and right turn signals do not blink the problem may be a bad flasher unit, a faulty switch, a blown Fuse or loose connection. A visual examination of the fuse box may shake out a blown turn signal fuse; however, it is wise to examine the wiring for a short before putting in a new fuse. The turn signal and hazard flasher relay is very easily accessed, it is mounted behind the knee bolster, right at the end of the instrument panel junction block. In order to remove it, the knee bolster must be taken off, then the relay is situated on the instrument panel junction block assembly, the electrical connector has to be disconnected from the flasher unit and then the flasher unit has to be taken off the assembly. As much as possible, make sure that the replacement unit is the same as the unit replaced, which can be done by comparing the new and old units just before the installation which must be done in the order opposite to the removal process.
