Toyota Land Cruiser Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and reinstall the full-floating Axle Shaft and Wheel Seal on a Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Remove the axleshaft flange nuts and lock washers. Using a brass punch or hammer, tap on the center of the flange studs to loosen the cone washers and remove them from the hub. Tighten two bolts into the axle flange service holes until the axleshaft separates from the rear hub assembly, then remove the axleshaft. Inspect the axleshaft seal for wear; if replacement is necessary, the oil seal can be removed using a slide hammer with an internal puller jaw attachment or carefully pried out with a seal removal tool. Always lubricate the inner lip of the new oil seal with a small amount of multi-purpose grease before reinstalling the axleshaft. When installing the axleshaft, clean the gasket sealing area and place a new gasket on the flange. Slide the axleshaft into the housing, engaging the axleshaft splines into the Differential. Install the cone washers, lock washers, and nuts, then tighten the nuts.
