Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the center console and the upper and lower center trim panels. Pull back the carpeting and remove the fasteners securing the airbag ECU to the floor, then set the ECU aside. Remove the large clips and disconnect the cable ends at the shifter mechanism, twisting the cables to separate them from the bracket. Remove the plastic shield at the lower left of the heating/air conditioning unit, then take out the nuts securing the shift cable plate and grommet to the floor. Remove the large clips that secure the cable ends to the transaxle, and separate the cables from the cable bracket on the transaxle; in some later models, it may be necessary to drop the exhaust pipe for more working room. Under the vehicle, remove the two nuts securing the cable bracket to the floor, then pull the cables and grommet through the floor and out. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
