Toyota Solara Release Bearing

In short, the Toyota Solara Release Bearing allows your car to shift gears smoothly. It separates the engine power coming to the gearbox when you press the clutch pedal. The Release Bearing is located inside the clutch housing. It slides along a hollow shaft and pushes against the springs of the pressure plate. This momentarily lifts the clutch disc off the flywheel so that the Solara driver can select a gear without grinding. As the pedal rises, the Release Bearing moves back, allowing torque to flow again and allowing the Toyota to move smoothly through traffic. Only two actuation styles have been applied throughout production years, cable controlled and hydraulic. Both styles rely on the same Release Bearing motion. In the case of cable controlled, it is pulled by a mechanically adjusted cable. In the case of hydraulic, it is driven by fluid pressure for lighter pedal feel. Wear eventually creeps in from constant contact, heat, and invading dust from outside. A failing bearing will announce itself with rattles, the pedal vibrating, or stubborn shifting that could sideline a Toyota if ignored. If any Solara owner can recognize these symptoms quickly, they can replace the Release Bearing before collateral clutch damage occurs.

Toyota Solara Release Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install Clutch Fork and Release Bearing on 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara?
    A:
To remove the component, first disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then remove the transaxle. Next, reach behind the Clutch Fork to disengage it from the ballstud by pulling on the retention spring, followed by removing the fork and bearing. For inspection, hold the bearing by the outer race and rotate the inner race while applying pressure; it should turn smoothly, and if it doesn't or is noisy, replace it. Wipe the bearing with a clean rag and check for damage, wear, and cracks, avoiding immersion in solvent as it is sealed for life. Also, inspect the Clutch Fork for any cracks or bends. For installation, fill the inner groove of the release bearing with high-temperature grease and apply a light coat to the transaxle input shaft splines and the sleeve of the front bearing retainer. Lubricate the Clutch Fork ball socket, fork ends, and release cylinder pushrod socket with high-temperature grease. Attach the release bearing to the Clutch Fork, then slide it onto the transaxle input shaft front bearing retainer while passing the end of the Clutch Fork through the opening in the clutch housing, ensuring the Clutch Fork is firmly seated on the ball-stud. Apply a light coat of high-temperature grease to the face of the release bearing where it contacts the pressure plate diaphragm fingers, and complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
