If the engine is started while the gear shift lever is in any position other than Park or Neutral, or if back-up lights do not light up when the shift lever is moved to R, the neutral start control switch should be checked and readjusted; to do which, the car has to be lifted off the ground supported on jack stands. On models from 1979 through 1984, place the shift lever in Neutral and absent the switch bolt. The groove in the end of the control shaft has to be placed vertically and lined up with the neutral basic line on the switch; if not then turn the switch round to match it, then put a bolt in. For models from 1985 and later, set the transmission shift lever in the Neutral and disconnect the electrical connector to the switch and fasten an ohmmeter across terminals N and B which are scored on the connector. Remove the nut and or bolt screwing the neutral start switch bolt and rotate the switch until you find a connection between the N or B terminals or align the rubber flap on the switch bar with the neutral BASIC line and tighten the bolt.
