On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the exhaust pipe or frame crossmember to gain access to the starter motor, and in extreme cases, unbolting the mounts and raising the engine slightly may be required to remove the starter. Begin by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Clearly label and disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor solenoid, followed by removing the mounting bolts to detach the starter. If only replacing the starter while intending to reuse the same solenoid, separate the starter motor from the solenoid. Installation is the reverse of removal.
