Start the process when the engine is cold and cool for at least three hours. Put a container made from metal below the filter, along with rags or newspaper, to stop fuel dripping and reduce fuel system pressure. Carefully back off the banjo bolts that hold the fuel filter to your vehicle. Once both lines are free, be sure to write down which line connects to which part of the filter. For 4Runners, the fuel filter sits underneath the frame of the car. Use both bracket bolts to disconnect the old filter and underlying support bracket. Remove the filter clamp bolt to separate the filter from the bracket. Remember to note the inlet and outlet lines while making sure the filter's heavy side points downward. Place the new filter and bracket, tighten the bracket bolts, and put the filter down into the housing with the rib side facing up. Put in the new sealing washers designed by the filter's maker, install the inlet and outlet banjo bolts, and make sure they are tightened to the correct torque values. Once the old filter is replaced, you uninstall the parts backward from how they were installed.

Both bracket bolts should be removed to detach the old filter and the filter support bracket.
