Toyota Prius Ignition Switch

The Ignition Switch for the Toyota Prius controls the distribution of battery power to circuits which allow the operator to start the engine, use components or lock. When correct key insertion or fob signal acceptance occurs, turning or pressing the Ignition Switch to start sends current to starter circuits, fuel injection, and ignition circuits, cranking the engines as per the requirement. When the Ignition Switch is in the on position, power is supplied to the engine as well as electrical components. The acc position allows the radio or windows to work without starting the engine. Changing the position of the Ignition Switch to off will eliminate power while moving it to lock will allow for the removal of the key, lock the steering column, and shift interlock to keep the gear selector in park. If your Ignition Switch isn't working correctly, it may jam, stop supplying power, or lose contact for a moment over bumps. In that case, your Toyota Prius may not crank, your components may shut down, or even your Toyota Prius may stall when on the move. So, your switch must function reliably with every Toyota Prius.

Toyota Prius Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect and remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on a Toyota Prius?
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the auxiliary 12-volt battery, ensuring to perform the initialization procedure upon reconnection. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch, then remove the ignition switch retaining screws and take the switch out of the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing, with installation being the reverse of removal. Place the ignition key in the ACC position, then use an awl or punch to depress the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining pin and remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder from the housing. To install the lock cylinder, depress the retaining pin and guide the lock cylinder into the housing until the retaining pin extends back into the locating hole. The remainder of installation follows the reverse of removal.
