Toyota MR2 Headlight Switch

The Toyota MR2 Headlight Switch is a cockpit control that allows a driver to instantly turn on the sports car front lamps or dim them for city driving. The Headlight Switch contains an internal set of electrical contacts connected to the lighting circuit. Therefore, merely flicking the switch sends current to the low beams, while pulling the stalk or rotating it triggers the high beams for shining light. In early generations, the Headlight Switch is found on a stalk mounted on the steering column. The stalk rotates forward for the main beams and pulls back for flash-to-pass. The dimmer is integrated in the same lever. Subsequent revisions retained the stalk arrangement, but the detents were improved for a smoother feel. However, the wiring logic stayed the same, which means every MR2 owner can enjoy fingertip control without searching for the dash. All models have the rheostat located adjacent to the Headlight Switch that adjusts the illumination of the gauges to reduce glare at night. Since all the lamps operate through the one fuse-protected route the Headlight Switch supplies, diagnosis is relatively easy and the sporty cockpit looks of the Toyota nameplate are preserved. Substituting an aged switch restores full lighting authority and an original Toyota MR2 interior feel while being compliant with safety laws.

Toyota MR2 Headlight Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Check the Headlight Switch on a Toyota MR2?
    A:
The headlight switch and rheostat are located in the left pod of the instrument cluster finish panel. To check the switch or rheostat, first disconnect the instrument cluster finish panel from the dash panel and pull it out to access the electrical connector. Disconnect the headlight switch electrical connector, then remove the large locknut by pulling the knob straight off and using a six-point, deep socket to take off the switch housing from the cluster finish panel. To check the light control switch, use an ohmmeter to verify continuity between terminals; if continuity is not as specified, replace the switch. For the light control rheostat, measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 9 while gradually changing the brightness from maximum to minimum, ensuring the resistance increases from 0 to 4.5 ohms; if it does not, replace the switch. Installation follows the reverse order of removal.
