- Q: How to remove and replace the shift cable on Toyota MR2?A:Remove the rear console box and the console from the passenger compartment. If replacing the select control cable, remove the retainer clip securing the cable to the selecting bell crank and disconnect it from the bell crank. For the shift control cable, remove the nut securing it to the shift lever and detach the cable. For the select control cable, pry loose the left clip securing it to the shift lever retainer plate and detach it from the retainer; for the shift control cable, pry loose the right clip and detach it from the retainer. Open the engine compartment lid to locate the selecting bellcrank and shift lever assemblies on the front of the transaxle. If replacing the select control cable, remove the clip securing it to the selecting bell crank and disconnect the cable. For the shift control cable, remove the clip securing it to the shift lever, remove the outer washer, and disconnect the cable. Each cable is secured to the control cable bracket with a clip, so pry either or both clips loose from the bracket depending on which cable is being replaced. Pull the cable through the rubber grommet in the firewall between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal.
