If this tool is not available, one can also use a sharp knife with a view of removing the lip from the old seal without scratching the crankshaft. After stripping off the lip, one can use a screwdriver with the tape around it, to ease out the seal. Then, apply multi-purpose grease to the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal as well. Push the new Crankshaft Seal into the retainer straight utilizing a wood block or a piece of pipe that is slightly smaller in diameter to the outer diameter of the seal so that the seal will not be cocked in the retainer bore.
