Remove the center console, then take off the retaining clips and washers from the cable ends at the transaxle. Next, remove the large clips and washers that secure the shift and select cables to the bracket on the transaxle. Detach the bolts that connect the cable retainer to the firewall, if applicable, and remove the outer retainer and grommet. For some models, it may be necessary to remove the heater core or evaporator housing to access these bolts. After that, take off the clips and washers that attach the shift and select cables to the shift lever, followed by the large clip-type cable retainers that secure the cables to the bracket at the forward end of the shift lever base. Remove the inner retainer and grommet from the passenger side of the firewall, then pull the cable(s) out through the firewall. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that when attaching cables to the front of the shifter assembly, the wider part of the cable end flange faces up, and when securing the shift cable ends to the shifter with clips and washers, the toothed edge of the cable eyes should also face up.
