Toyota Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Oil Pan in V8 engine on 2003 through 2009 Toyota 4Runner?
A: To remove the engine, begin with such steps as, pulling out the oil and the oil filter from the engine. Subsequently, remove the actual engine from the car. Continue to the elimination of timing belt, number 1 and number 2 idler pulleys, crankshaft pulley, and crank pulsed sensor if the oil pump is not to be removed. Next, remove the oil dipstick tube, the oil filter, the oil cooler and the oil filter bracket assembly from the engine. Take out the lower steel oil pan bolts and nuts and un-bolt the part and if is fully bonded to the engine remove it gently without causing harm to the mating surface. Later, unbolt and take off the baffle plate which is in the lower part of the engine, and the upper oil pan in a similar fashion with the bolts and nuts being removed. Last of all, unscrew the oil pump strainer. To install, remove all the old sealants, using a scraper, from the block, the lower and upper oil pans; wash the contact surfaces with the brake system cleaner. Clean the through bolts wholes in the engine block and the number 1 oil pan, and inspect the flange of the lower oil pan; it may be dented: use a hammer to level them. Check the oil pump pick-up/strainer for crack or blockages; if removed-clean it and replace the gasket, tighten the pick-up/stainer attaching bolts/nuts to the recommended torque. On the flange of the upper oil pan, run a 3/16-inch wide bead of RTV sealant, place the flange onto the engine block, place the bolts in the flange and tighten start on centre then continue and end on outside in three or four steps respectively. Fit the baffle plate next and also apply some 3/16-inch wide RTV sealant on the flange of lower oil pan and place the upper oil pan flange over the lower one and fasten the bolts of the upper flange as tight as possible in three or four times in center bolt fashion. The rest of the installation process is a reversal of the removal process, to make sure that fresh oil is added, and new oil filter and the cooling system is refilled. Lastly, start the engine and ensure that there is good oil pressure and there are no signs of the oil leaking out.
  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan in 3.0L and 3.3L V6 engine on Toyota Highlander?
A: To remove the hood, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, raise the vehicle, and securely support it on jackstands. Remove the engine splash shields, drain the engine oil, and remove the oil filter. The oil pan consists of an aluminum casting attached to the block and transaxle, along with a lower stamped-steel pan section. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter and the support bracket, and remove the nuts holding the pipe to the exhaust manifolds. Remove the driveplate cover by taking out two bolts, then remove the two bolts securing the aluminum oil pan section to the transaxle. Detach the steel oil pan section by removing ten bolts and two nuts; if it's stuck, carefully pry it loose without damaging the mating surfaces. Remove the oil pump strainer/pickup and the bolts securing the aluminum oil pan section to the block, noting that some bolts may be under the steel pan. If equipped, remove the oil pan baffle plate. For installation, use a scraper to eliminate old sealant from the block and oil pan, clean the mating surfaces, and ensure the threaded bolt holes in the block are clean. Check the flange of the steel pan section for distortion and flatten it if necessary. Reinstall the baffle if it was removed, clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and aluminum pan section, and apply a 4 mm wide bead of RTV sealant to the aluminum pan section. Install the aluminum pan section within five minutes and uniformly tighten the bolts from the center outwards. Inspect the oil pump pick-up/strainer assembly for cracks and blockages, clean it if removed, and install it with a new gasket. Apply a 3 to 4 mm wide bead of RTV sealant to the flange of the steel oil pan section, position it carefully on the aluminum section, and install the bolts, tightening them from the center out. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, allowing the sealant to set for at least two hours before adding new oil and a new oil filter, then run the engine to check for oil pressure and leaks.
  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan in four cylinder engine on 2005 through 2009 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The oil pan cannot be removed from these vehicles without firstly having to remove the engine of the car. The first step to follow, before lowering the oil pan, is to unfasten the cable, which connects the battery's negative terminal. Then, next, you should remove the engine and then you should undo the bolts and nuts situated on the lower part of the oil pan. If the oil pan is stuck, use a soft-face hammer steadily to hit the suspected places until it pops off or use the knife blade to force it in the joint and hammer round the seal, without pulling or using a screwdriver. The stamped steel lower oil pan has a multiple row sealing flange and if this flange is distorted, this can be easily unwrapped by putting it on a flat surface and using a hammer and a punch to flatten the distorted section. After detaching the lower pan, extract the nuts and bolts holding the outlet of the oil pump pick-up tube and strainer and then, eliminate the instalment and the gasket as well. Next, unscrew the bolts/nuts holding the upper oil pan and if they are tight, you can use the above procedure to loosen the holding mechanism. For installation, one has to scrape off all the used gasket material and sealant from the block and the oil pan surfaces with a scraper and wash the mating surfaces with the brake system cleaner. Make sure that the threaded bolt holes are clean, then spread a 1/8-of-an-inch wide strip of RTV sealant on the oil pan flange, while it must go inside of the holes for bolts, and install it in 5 minutes. Finally the upper oil pan is to be bolted into position with the fasteners tightened in a triangular moat to a torque of 15 lb. ft. Check the oil pump pick-up tube assembly for crack and if it is has a blocked strainer then replace new gasket for tube assembly and tighten the bolts of tube assembly. Place 1/8-inch of RTV sealant on the lower oil pan just inside the bolt holes, then bolt it into place and use nuts and bolts to tighten them in a criss-cross fashion to the recommended torque. On average, it is recommended that no oil be added for 4 hours after installation of the filter, whereas the rest of the installation process should be done in a backward manner to that of removal. Finally, install the engine.
